Match Trivia
Until McInally was injured – fifteen minutes after the start – the Warriors were having quite as much of the play as the Rangers, and the centre-forward was certainly playing a prominent part in the Cathkin attack. He returned after receiving attention, but was obviously unfit, and did no re-appear after the interval. Twice before he was inured McInally picked up Reid crosses but was crowded out in the act of manoeuvring or shooting position. At the other end, Jarvie stopped a Henderson rocket, dropped it, and recovered in time to prevent the on-rushing centre-forward from netting. Kilpatrick next tried his luck with a fierce volley only to find the Cathkin keeper again in position. Higgins varied the proceedings by gliding past Dixon and Manderson, but his parting volley was faulty in location. Henderson and Kilpatrick in turn made further endeavours to elude Jarvie’s vigilance, but on each occasion the keeper came out on top. Alec Reid, operating in the centre, made herculean efforts to burst through the Rangers’ defence, but had invariably to succumb to force of numbers. Twenty-two minutes after resuming Cairns headed home a Meiklejohn lob, but this was neutralised six minutes later by Bobby Orr, who picked up a Reid free kick and drove in the equaliser. Other nine minutes later and Henderson burst through to regain the lead, but like the Cathkin players, I think the centre-forward should have been adjudged offside. The referee’s decision was, however, corroborated by both linesmen after consultation. In the course of a rousing finish, Robb flashed across goal to effect a brilliant save from Cringan, and at four minutes to go Cunningham found the rigging with the best shot of the game. Jarvie justified all good things that have been said of him of late; Brown was the more reliable Cathkin back, and Jimmy Walker the best middle-man on view. Reid and Higgins shone in front. Manderson was the better Rangers’ defender; and Meiklejohn the most successful half-back. Cairns excelled in a front rank which moved in perfect harmony and of the others Morton and Cunningham were bes
