Match Trivia

Played on Cathkin Park before 5000 spectators. The Third kicked off, but the Rangers led on by McPherson, had the first run of the day, when Cochrane ran out and kicked the ball clear. A minute later the Third’s forwards had a grand run almost the length, and the ball being well centred from the right, the Third’s centre, who was in excellent position had no difficulty in opening the scoring. The Rangers tried hard to draw level, and a quick shot along the ground from A Smith was just stopped in time. The Third had a spell of attacking work, but Bell saved well in close quarters. So far the Third Lanark had the best of the exchanged, playing dashing go-ahead football, and they were not long in putting on a second goal, the ball striking the bat, dropping down, and going through. The Rangers seemed completely out of sorts, and their display was in strange contrast to that of their opponents. The plat throughout was fast and interesting to watch, but the Third were masters of the situation, and a third goal was scored, Bell running out of his goal, bit it was disallowed for offside. The Rangers forwards had a sprint along the field, and A Smith running across banged in a shot, the ball hitting the crossbar and going through. At Halftime the Third led by 2 goals to 1. The Rangers form improved greatly in the second half, and gave the Third some hot shot to deal with. From a centre right across the goalmouth Boyd might have easily have scored and equalised, but he missed badly. The Third rallied a bit, Barbour putting in some clever play at halfback, and Crawford just saved, kicking neatly as one of the opposition forwards was about to send the ball through. Peedie the Third’s inside left was crippled at the start, and his shooting subsequently was weak. Hugh McCreadie scored the second and the equalising goal after a good run. The Third’s backs were lying too far up, with the result that when the Rangers made the pace they had practically a clear way. The game was well contested along, and the spectators were quite enthusiastic in their appreciation of the play. The Rangers were clearly having the best of it in this half and might have been leading for a miss by Oswald. The Rangers scored a third and leading goal, but it was disallowed for offside. The Third made a determined effort to get the lead again, and Peddie sent in a fine oblique shot, the ball just going past the post. The Third tried to rush the game and did so to some purpose, but Bell was their stumbling block, and although he was a bit lucky, still he always managed to get the ball away. Cochrane too was quite as equal in the Third goal, and there can he little doubt the Volunteers have found an able custodian. The Rangers after thirty minutes play scored the third goal and leading goal, Boyd sending the ball through, and just before this they had another – the second – disallowed point. The Third’s thin chance of even equalising was for slipping away, but they made a dying effort, which might have been successful but for slack work when it came to close quarters. The Result was Rangers 3 goals: Third Lanark 2 goals.
