Match Trivia
Belgian War Relief Fund Shield. With £115 drawn yesterday at Cathkin Park, an excellent start has been made with the shield competition for the War Relief Fund. If all the matches do just as well, the competition will have more than justified itself. Rangers had intended playing Paterson on the left wing, but instead he was given outside-right position and Smith was retained on the left. Orr was suffering from an injury sustained against Galston, and had to stand out of the Third Lanark team. Neither Lennon nor Gibb was quite fit, but they played. Rangers had the best of the first half, but could score only once, although the home goal had a few narrow escapes. Pursell got the goal ten minutes before the interval. Brownlie would probably have saved, but he apparently expected one of the others to clear, and when the ball reached him it was too late to go down to it. All three goals scored in the second half were to the credit of Reid. The first of these was made easy for him through Brownlie failing to get hold of a long punt by Kelso; the second was the result of a regular Reid rocket; and the third was from a hard shot close in after he had collected a centre from the left. Third Lanark’s forwards frequently carried the ball as far as the Rangers’ backs, but there they failed to keep it. From a Rangers’ point of view, the game in some respects, was encouraging. The scoring of three goals by Reid may bring back some of his lost confidence. A player can do very little good without it. Cairns and Smith were a capital wing, and Craig was consistently good. Gibb was prominent for Third Lanark defence. Brownlie was at a disadvantage, as previous to the scoring of the second goal, he had racked himself, which explains why he could not gather the ball from Kelso, Walker was also injured, and his movement was consequently impeded
