Match Trivia
It was a red-letter day for Cathkin with Rangers in opposition, and the attendance touched 15,000. The first-half feature was the play of Turnbull in the home goal, who had all the honour in his side crossing over one goal to the bad. The Light Blues mad a bright start, and were all over the ‘Warriors’ in the opening stages. After Gordon had all but done the trick, the Rangers claimed a goal after a strenuous tackle between McLean and Turnbull, but there was nothing doing. The ‘Govanities’ were a class by themselves this half. Thirds couldn’t raise a gallop. It was the Rangers’ attack verses the home defence, with the Lugar Boswell man the man who mattered. He reproduced his Hampden form. He got rid of one of McLean’s best, held point-blank from Cairns, and spread-eagled himself to get a possible counter from Jaimmie Bowie. Closing in on the interval, Rangers opened their register. A brisk attack found two defenders at fault, and McLean scored, Turnbull having no chance. The turn-over score does not flatter the Ibrox lot, as they were easy masters. Thirds went all out to make a game of it in the second half, but Rangers were the first to score, Bowie nipping in and planting a nice ball past Turnbull. There was more equality in the succeeding passages, and to the finish it was a ding-dong struggle. Allan reduced the leeway, but Thirds disappointed their patrons. For the winners, Hempsey, was safe, Blair the better back, Walls and Dixon strong at Half. Forward, McLean had it as a shot, but Bowie, Cairns and Aiken were always outstanding. Third Lanark’s best were Turnbull, McGowan, McLaughlin, Sowerby, Graham and Allan
