Match Trivia

The Rangers and the 3rd L.R.V. played off their tie on Cathkin Park before 6000 spectators. The Third won the toss, and played with a pretty strong wind in their favour. Robin kicked off for the Rangers. The Volunteers were making tracks for their opponent’s goal, when they were twice intercepted by Hendry. The Rangers had then an excellent run, the ball being passed by Gow to the left wing, and McCracken had to concede a corner. Some stiff play ensued in midfield, after which Johnstone and Burke by a tricky run brought the ball up to the Rangers goal, when a corner was granted. The ball was well centred, and nearly went through. This smart attack by the Third was loudly cheered. The home side continued to keep up the pressure, but the high wind spoiled the play all round. A beautiful bit of passing by Marshall, Morrison and Hamilton transferred the ball close to the Rangers goal, but Hamilton failed. The cup-holders, notwithstanding that some of their men were reported out of form, were playing magnificently, and time after time stormed the Rangers citadel, Reid on one occasion saving smartly. The Rangers plodded away, but they were never dangerous, and all the play that was going was certainly in favour of the Third. The Rangers defence was sorely tried, but they succeeded in keeping their goal intact. McCracken was playing splendidly for the Volunteers, while Burke and Johnstone were as effective as ever forward. Morrison however was erratic, and failed to pass the ball at the proper time. The Home side got another corner flag kick, and a good shot was sent in. Reid punted the ball out, and Love returned it finely, only it was a little wide of the mark. A foul given against Burke brought relief to the Rangers, bit it was of short duration, as the Third immediately returned to the attack, and Rae gave Morrison an opportunity to score, but he did not avail himself of it. A foul was given against the Rangers close to their goalmouth, and many persons thought McCracken had scored, but the ball went past. On the kick-off the Third fairly besieged the Rangers goal, and Burke sent the ball through, Reid missing it as he was about to be charged. Following upon this Donald Gow had a speedy run for the Rangers, but in shooting across the goalmouth the ball went past, and a corner immediately afterwards came to nothing. With the exception of two runs by Donald Gow, who was not well supported by the other forwards, the Rangers were seldom in it. Allan played a poor game, and could never get on the ball. McIntyre however was in good form and played very hard indeed, and he was well supported by Hay and Hendry. The Third tried hard to increase their score, but were unfortunate, and so were the Rangers, who had a corner kick and nearly put the ball through. When halftime was called the game stood – 3rd Lanark 1: Rangers 0. On resuming, Gow had a good run by himself, Rae failing in endeavouring to tackle him. The ball was passed at the right moment to Allan, but it came to nothing. Play became uninteresting neither side doing much until ten minutes after the start, when the Third made a combined attack on the Rangers goal. Reid however saved cleverly. Five minutes later the Rangers brought the ball right up, and a foul being given against the Third close to goal, Allan got the ball and with a quick high shot scored for the Rangers, Downie being unable to save. With the score equal, and the wind in their favour the Rangers played with renewed vigour, but were met by a stubborn defence. The game had to be stopped for a minute or so owing to an accident to Johnstone, who afterwards went limping about the field, and Morrison was also lame. Marshall was playing best among the Third’s forwards, but Morrison failed to take up his passes, and all his efforts went for nothing. The Rangers had all the chances in their favour now, and Gow sent in a smart shot, which Downie promptly caught and kicked out. Gow was by far the best forward on the Rangers side, his shooting being well judged. The Third despite the fact that some of their men were done up, were not quite played out, and they experienced the hardest lines in not scoring on two occasions. The Third pressed till the close, but could not increase their score, and the game ended in a draw – 1 goal each.
