Match Trivia
This holiday match was played at Cathkin Park under favourable weather conditions. The attendance was below the average, only about 4000 spectators being present when the teams appeared. A feature of the game was the omission of the offside rule. The Rangers started the game; a run by McPherson was intercepted by Simpson, who sent the ball well up the field. The Third got a corner, but Mitchell cleared. Then the Rangers had a look-in, but Oswald shot wide. Play was very fast, each goal being assailed in turn. A splendid run by Beveridge and Garside nearly had the desired effect, but McKenzie saved smartly. A minute later a good shot from Steel brought a corner, but the ball was placed behind. The Rangers were travelling strongly, and from a pass to the right wing A Smith scored their first goal. A minute later Garside had a chance to equalise, but McKenzie saved at the expense of a corner. The kick was badly placed by Beveridge, who sent the ball behind. The Rangers soon had the ball at the other end, and McPherson passed to Oswald who scored a second goal for the Rangers with an easy shot. At last the Third managed to score Peddie sending the ball through from a scrimmage. A magnificent save by McKenzie was the next feature of the game. Peddie had the goal at his mercy, but McKenzie blocked his shot and sent the ball well up the field. Halftime result – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 1 goal. After the interval the Third led off, but Steel’s shot was returned by N Smith. Then the Rangers had a look in, but not for long, as the Third got relief with a free kick. Coming away in a body, the Third gave the Rangers defence plenty of work. Mitchell centred the ball, but it was got clear away, when a long shot by Lyon took effect, and the game was equal. The Third continued to press, but met with sturdy opposition from McKenzie. Bowman tripped Smith and a penalty kick was awarded the Rangers. McPherson took the place, and after twice ineffectually trying to net the ball, the referee for some inexplicable reason gave him a third chance of which he availed himself. Fyfe soon afterwards equalised by taking goalkeeper and the ball into the net, and just at the close Garside put on the fourth. The game was interesting as an experiment, but the general consensus of opinion seems to be – omission of the offside rule will not do.
