Match Trivia
Rangers got their first two points at Cathkin last night, and were worthy winners of a game which was keenly fought from start to finish. There was seldom any doubt as to who were the masters, the ‘Light Blues’ moving with greater solidity all through, and although, like their opponents, they had weak spots, these were not so pronounced. They were also fortunate in getting two rather simple-looking goals. Where the Third failed was in their inability to finish the outfield work, several scoring chances being missed. The champions, of course, had also their chances and failed, and altogether the score just about represents the quality of the teams. Third Lanark met with misfortune early on. Five minutes after the start, Archibald drove a ball across the goal, and Slavin, in attempting to clear, put the ball past Brownlie. After 35 minutes of play Cunningham shot from 20 yards to beat Brownlie, and with five minutes of the first half to go Reid reduced the leeway, scoring off a Rangers’ defender. ‘The Third’ started the second half well, and Robb had to extend himself to clear a high one from Frank Walker. Cairns missed an open goal, and then Robb cleared finely from Allan. With 20 minutes to go Morton shot from well out, and the ball going over Brownlie’s head, struck the off post, and rebounded through. That finished the scoring, and also any chance ‘the Third’ had of sharing the points. Rangers were strong in defence, which was never really stretched. All the half-backs did well, with Muirhead probably the cleverest of the three. In attack Morton and Cunningham were well ahead of the others, the big, fair-haired international distributing the play nicely. Little fault could be found with the Cathkin defenders, although Brownlie had a chance with Morton’s goal. Orr was splendid, and Slavin for a first appearance, showed great promise. All the Walkers did well, and Reid did much that was clever, apart from getting Cathkin’s only goal
