Match Trivia

Played at Cathkin Park before 10,000 spectators. At the start of the game the Rangers were penalised for an infringement, but the free kick was of no service to the Third, one of whose players was forced to send the ball back to Ross, who picked it up and threw it out to Bell. This players cleverly got away and centred. Here Gibson got possession, and soon afterwards the Third conceded a corner, which had no effect on the game. This early both teams with downright earnest work had a look in. Johnston was early prominent, and had a splendid try at Montgomery, bowling over Prey in easy fashion before parting with the ball. Smart dribbling and rapid shooting enabled the Rangers to get ahead again, and after 20 minutes the ball was headed through the Third’s goal. Continuing to press, the Third were awarded a corner, which was fruitless, and at halftime the Rangers led by a goal to nil. Play was resumed by the Third making tracks for Montgomery, Drummond lay in waiting, and completely spoiled their efforts with fine blocking and an equally fine return to midfield. Here Hamilton fastened on and passed over to Barker, who in turn dashed down single-handed and shot in with unerring accuracy. It was lucky for the Third that Ross was on the spot. A minute later Prey sent in a shot, which Ross had difficulty in getting rid of. At goal the Rangers were as usual very smart, much more than the Third, and Hamilton, after failing to utilise a chance redeemed himself a minute later by rushing passed the backs and shooting successfully at goal, the Rangers thus leading by 2 to 0. The Third exerted themselves to the utmost, but hard lines was their lot. Nobody would have grudged them a goal. The game was spiritedly contested till the last minute, the Third pressing hard for a goal. The result of an exciting and hard game was – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 0 goals.
