Match Trivia
These teams met at Cathkin Park last night in the Glasgow League, about 1000 spectators were present. The Rangers lost the toss and started the game against a storm of wind and rain, which coupled with the greasy state of the pitch, militated considerably against scientific play on either side. The Volunteers pressed for a time at the start, but Dickie and his backs defended well. Gibbons and Johnstone both missed easy chances. After a long spell of defensive work, occasionally varied by a spasmodic wing rush, the Rangers got away, and R C Hamilton, lying well up field luckily beat Pollock and scored. The home forwards again became aggressive, but their former failing – bad shooting – kept them from equalising. Halftime – Rangers 1: 3d Lanark 0. Just after the restart Hamilton from a rally in front of Milne, got home a soft high shot which the goalkeeper ought easily to have saved. Hyslop had a brilliant try which Milne held cleverly, and then A Sharp shot well, but the wind carried the ball over the bar. The Rangers gradually assumed the upper hand, but the success of their play was principally due to having the climatic conditions in their favour rather than to any cleverness displayed by their front rank. Towards the finish of the game Hyslop scored twice and McPherson once, time being called with the score – Rangers 5: Third Lanark 0.
