Match Trivia
Played on the Third Lanark ground before a good attendance. The Rangers kicked off against the wind, and were soon down on their opponent’s charge, Anderson getting the ball away just as he was about to be rushed through the goal. Fast play ensued, the Third forcing the game to some purpose, and showing probably better form than they had done at any time this season. From a long return by Drummond, the Rangers almost scored the first goal of the game. Gray by a good effort, got the ball just as it was about to roll over the goal-line, and shot right into Anderson, who got it away with his hand. For a time the Rangers compelled the Third to act almost entirely on the defensive, and on one occasion in particular their goal has a narrow escape. Relieved of the pressure by good halfback play, the Volunteers led an attack on the Rangers stronghold, when Boyd shot wildly over the bar. Boyd was very conspicuous in the Rangers front line, putting in a lot of useful hard work. From a pass of his in front of goal, the ball was sent in, but Anderson picked it up and cleared grandly. Excitement was intense as the Third had a rousing run, and as the result of a warm attack they almost scored. Milliken nearly had the ball through, but Haddow managed to reach it, and by a supreme effort cleared. There was some splendid tackling and clearing on both sides, and the game taken all over was stubbornly contested. From a free kick right in front of goal Anderson inadvertently conceded a corner, which was fruitless. After half an hour’s play the Rangers scored the first goal of the match, the result of a good run by McPherson. This was rather depressing for the Third, who for a time prior to this had the best of it, and experienced hard lines in not equalising. Gray had a brilliant run all by himself for the Rangers, and he finished up with a fine shot, which was well fisted away by Anderson. There was some desperately keen tussles between Stewart and Drummond, and the Rangers man had not always the best of it. Towards the close of the first half the Third were having nearly all the play, but experienced hard luck in front of goal, the Rangers always managing to get the ball away when everybody expected to witness it going through. At length a loud cheer proclaimed that they had scored and equalised. The ball came across from the left, and Stewart steadying himself made no mistake. It was really well deserved and on their play, which was better sustained than their opponents, they should have scored earlier. At halftime each side had a goal. The Rangers had the wind, which was slightly in their favour in the second half, which they started in sensational style by at once sending the ball through, but offside was given. Retaliating in spirited style, the Third sent the ball through after some hard work on the part of Johnston in front of goal. No goal was given, as the referee had previously blown his whistle for an infringement. The Wind was increasing and handicapping the Third more than it had done the Rangers in the first half, with the result that the Ibrox men were enabled to keep up a more sustained attack, and indeed they almost scored on two occasions. The Third however experienced very hard luck. The Rangers open out a bit, and from a long returns by Smith and Drummond, the Third’s goal had narrow escapes, Anderson however was in the mood, and played a safe reliable game, time after time getting the ball away when a little indecision at a critical time would have lost him a goal. At length after 16 minutes play, Boyd as the result of persistence pressure headed the ball through, thus giving his side the lead. The Third fell off considerably as the game progressed, and any attack they made were well warded off by the Rangers halfbacks, who were playing very well, and proving difficult to defeat. The game ended in favour of the Rangers by
