Match Trivia

This League fixture was played off at Cathkin Park this afternoon in beautiful weather. The grounds were well filled with spectators, about 5,000 being present. An exciting chase after a rabbit in an adjoining field till three minutes past four, when the home team stepped on to the field followed by the Rangers, and both were loudly cheered. At ten past four the referee (Mr McLachlan of the Celtic) started the game Bruce for Rangers, kicked off against wind and sun. Play remained in mid-field for a little, but a threw in gave Rangers a light advantage. A free kick shortly after increased this advantage, but it was short-lived, for the Third cane away well together and tried a shot at their opponents’ goal. Gow sent the ball to a place of safety. The Rangers now attacked Downie and a splendid shot by J McPherson was fisted out by Lochhead. The penalty kick awarded was taken by McCreadie and put through ten minutes after the start amid great excitement without Downie getting a chance. The visit was returned by the home team in a very determined way. Haddow’s energies were severely taxed, and at last he was beaten by the Third forwards, who rushed the ball through in a body. After even play, the Third again troubled Haddow, and a shot glanced off his hand, struck the post and rebounded into play. The ball was immediately taken by a fine combination run to the other end, and a beautiful piece of passing took place in front of Downie, to the goalkeeper’s great discomfort. A fine shot by Bruce, who was entrusted with the parting kick, took effect, and the visitors again led. Exciting end-to-end play succeeded, and again the backs saved cleverly, the Rangers being especially effective. A foul against the Third, taken by Marshall, was put through the goal without touching. Just before half-time the Third again tried hard to equalise, and Haddow was called upon to save a splendid shot from Brodie. This he did cleverly, and when the whistle blew the Rangers had transferred the play to Downie’s end, but the score then still stood at 2 goals to 1 in the Rangers’ favour. Immediately on opening the second half Rangers took the lead and pressed hard. Downie had some difficult shots to negotiate, but he proved equal to the occasion. McCreadie sent in a beautiful shot which almost took, and immediately after Gow shot over the bar. A corner fell to the visitors, but although well taken nothing came of it. At this point in the game Lochhead unfortunately got damaged and had to leave the field. Rangers continued to press and another fruitless corner fell to them. A free kick awarded the Third gave relief. Rangers were not long kept near their own goal but came down upon the Third’s goalkeeper, and a miss-kick by Smith gave McInnes a chance which Downie cleverly saved. At the expense of a corner, which was well cleared, and the play was transferred to the other end. The Third now with their eleven men had a share of the play, but had hard lines at goal. They were beaten back again, and the Rangers crowded round their goal. A long shot by McCreadie rebounded from the bar, and Bruce sent the ball through for the Rangers’ third time. From the kick off the home forwards carried the play towards Haddow; but a free kick was given against them for foul play to the goalkeeper, and their chance was lost. A long pass to Mackay was missed, and shortly after a nice bit of play ended in Brodie scoring the Third’s second goal. Immediately after this the Rangers again began to press and had several good opportunities, but missed them. A foul 30 yards from Downie was shot in, headed by D McPherson, and headed through by J McPherson. Shortly after, time was called, and the result stood – Rangers 4; 3rd Lanark 2.
