Match Trivia

This contest, judging from the large attendance of spectators assembled on Cathkin Park, had been looked forwards to with more than ordinary interest since the teams came out of the draw, ended in a tie, each side scoring three goals. The ground was in fine order, and there was little or no wind to interfere with the progress of the play. Somehow or other the Rangers always made a fine match of it with the Volunteers, and the present formed no exception to the rule, and indeed it looked till the very end of the contest as if the Ibrox Park men were going to win. They made a grand start, and from the kick-off by Kerr the ball was dribbled up the field, but sent down again by Smith. The 3rd L.R.V. pressed, and Lapsley nearly scored. After some give-and-take play the Rangers started a dashing run past the 3rd L.R.V. backs, and Wyllie getting the ball in good position, made a neat goal, in three minutes after the start. Flushed with this early success, the ball had no sooner been set off again than the Rangers made another beautiful run, and McPherson mad a second goal. The scoring at such a rapid rate was altogether unexpected, and created quite a sensation among the spectators. The Volunteers again brought up the ball and kicked off, and from the next start the home team made good work at the Rangers lines, and had a good chance, which was lost by Burke missing his kick at the posts. The kick out was followed by some even play in the centre. And from a smart run started by McPherson he passed the ball to Kerr, who goaled it very neatly. Off side however, was called before the ball went through between the posts, and of course no score was allowed. After the goalkeeper had kicked in front the ball was taken possession of by Lochhead, and kicked up the chalk mark in the centre. Here a hard scrimmage occurred for possession between Wyllie and Hislop, and at length the 3rd L.R.V. mad had the best of it, and took the leather up to the Rangers lines, and eventually within a few feet of the sticks, but lost a good chance by an unpardonable slackness which enabled the Rangers left back to get the ball away and send it into touch near the far-side stand. After this the Volunteers had really hard lines in not scoring, as a free kick not five yards from the goal caused the ball to go through, but no one had touched it, and no harm was done to the Rangers. Again the Rangers had to submit to a couple of corner-flag kick, and after one of these the ball was sent against the bar by Lapsley, and bounded past the posts. As halftime approached the Rangers had a good run on the left, and Kerr ended with a shy at goal, but the ball went harmlessly past. For the last five minutes of the first round the Volunteers made it hot for their powerful opponents, and the ball was ever and anon passing in front of their goal, but no more scoring occurred. The 3rd L.R.V. had now the wind against them, and kicked off from the centre. The forwards followed up in good style, and were soon down on the Rangers lines, where a scrimmage occurred, and ended in favour of the defenders, who got the ball well up on their opponents’ goal. A beautiful run was started by Wyllie, and kept up in fine form. He got the ball away from Thomson, and being possessed of more speed the young Rangers forwards shot out like a race horse nearing the winning post, and posing for a good shy, watched the keeper, and sent the ball through. This was now three goals to none in favour of the Rangers, and no sooner had the ball been kicked off from the centre than it was again taken up to the 3rd L.R.V. posts, and eventually scrimmaged past the lines. Love made a neat kick out in front, and after some even play the 3rd L.R.V. made a brilliant effort to drive the Rangers backs up on their stronghold, and at length succeeded. Some time however elapsed before the ball was fairly possessed by the Volunteers forwards, and at a good moment Thomson made the first point for the 3rd L.R.V. by a good steady shot. It was now the Rangers turn to kick off from the centre after facing up, and for fully five minutes the play was all over – sometimes at the Rangers goal, again at the 3rd L.R.V. goal, and now in the middle of the field. In a little however, the Rangers played beautifully together, and a capital run, in which rare dribbling and passing were seen on both sides, brought the wearers of the blue jerseys up to the 3rd L.R.V. goal, where McKenzie had a shy that caused the ball to rebound off the goal-bar, and Wyllie made a running shot that grazed the left posts. The 3rd L.R.V. played better after the scoring of their first goal, and several fine shies were made at the Rangers goal without effect, as Gow and his companion defended brilliantly, but at length Thomson again shot past and scored a second. With only six minutes to play the teams again faced up in midfield, and the Rangers, who had now the kick-off, got dangerously near the 3rd L.R.V. lines, but Kerr’s shot was nearly cleared away, and in the closing minutes of the game the 3rd L.R.V. rallies wonderfully, and again pressing the Rangers down on their goal made matters intensely exciting by scoring a third point – Lapsley and Thomson having equal credit in making it. The game thus ended in a draw, and will have to be played over again, probably on Saturday
