Match Trivia

A grand holiday match between these celebrated teams took place this afternoon on the ground of the former in Newcastle road. On the 4th of January last, when they met, a draw of one goal each was the result. Since then both teams have been materially strengthened, and the Rangers showed that they were in good form yesterday when they defeated Newcastle West End by 3 goals to nil, a score that would have been materially increased, but for the splendid defence of Whitton, the West End custodian. Yesterday a weakened home team beat Cowlairs by 4 goals to 3. The Rangers however are a very different club. They are members of the Scottish League, occupying the second place with 6 matches played, of which they have won 4, drawn 1 and lost 1, scoring 25 goals to 13, or 9 points. Dumbarton are first with two more matches played and six more points, but they have not yet lost a match. Sunderland have now played 28 matches of all kinds, and have won 3, lost 7, and drawn 8 with a score of 7 goals to 44. They are tenth in the English League with 12 points to their credit, irrespective of 2 deducted for an infringement of the rules. The visitors team was the same as that which played against the West End, except that H McCreadie having been hurt a re-arrangement was necessitated, Marshall a halfback going forward. They were also without their regular goalkeeper, Reid who did not accompany then on the trip. There were about 6,000 spectators, who gave Smith a rousing welcome. Sunderland won the toss, and at 2.20 Kerr started the ball from the upper end of the field. The home right wing was first to begin the attack. Harvie sent in a nice shot, which Gow repulsed. A miss kick by Kerr gave Scott, Hannah and Murray their opportunity, and the latter headed well to the front, but the ball was returned, and danger was threatening the Sunderland uprights when Porteous saved at a crucial moment. A fast game was evidently at hand, and the spectators settled themselves down to enjoy the treat. A long return kick was made by McIntyre, and Doig had to fist out. Hannah attempted to break away, but was well pulled up by McCreadie, and Marshall shot. The ball appeared at the time to be out of play, but went behind the posts. The visitors were still pressing, and Oliver rushed to the front like a forward, and when the ball was repulsed he was altogether out of his place. The result was a sharp attack by Marshall, which compelled Doig to swing the ball over the bar. The first corner thus fell to the visitors, but it was kicked out of play. Scott and Hannah now broke away, and by a beautiful run caused the utmost excitement to prevail, a goal seemed to be certain. However the defence held good, and Scott giving hands, Kerr ran off to the lower end once more. Olive headed back, and on a renewal of the attempt, Murray saved at the expense of a corner, upon which a miserable attempt was made to improve, the ball going out. The Rangers maintained the upper hand, and Doig had to give a corner. The ball dropped so close in front of the home citadel that the majority of the spectators seemed to think it had gone out altogether, but suddenly the ball was headed through in a crowd, and a loud shout proclaimed that the visitors had drawn first blood, after little more than ten minutes play. After McCulloch had foiled Hannah, for which he was penalised, Gow yielded ‘hands’, and close lay followed, in the vicinity of the Rangers citadel, Scott shooting barely past the posts. Desperate efforts were now made by the home tea, to get on even terms, and Campbell twice all but scored, a corner being the result, from which the same layer appeared to score. Loud shoots were raised that he had done so, but the game went on as usual. Hislop made play to the lower end and let fly with no one between him and Doig. The ball slanting passed outside the posts, and Hislop being obviously offside at the time, a free kick ensured for Sunderland. Play ruled faster than ever, a fine exhibition of football being given by either side. The home goal had a second narrow escape, Scott attempted to change the venue, but McCulloch was there before him, and sent across to his partner, who cleared in a trice. The next exchanges were at the lower end of the field. Porteous stopped a ground grazer, but the ball being returned high up, Doig evoked cheers by the promptitude with which he averted disaster, although at the expense of a corner, which like nearly all the others went behind. A visit to the Glasgow half was of brief duration. The Rangers secured a fresh corner off Auld, but Sunderland cleared in the squash. Halftime – Sunderland 1 goals: Rangers 1 goal. Full time – Sunderland 3 goals: Rangers 1 goal
