Billy made 102 first team appearances, his debut coming the day before his 19th birthday as Rangers defeated Stirling Albion 3-2 in a league match at Annfield. He would go on to win a league championship medal in that debut season of 1958/59, appearing in 26 of a possible 34 league matches.
The Scottish Cup would follow the following season, Stevenson part of the starting XI which defeated Kilmarnock 2-0 at Hampden, Jimmy Millar netting the goals.
Billy would replicate that feat South of the border, enjoying even greater success at Liverpool under legendary Scottish manager Bill Shankly. He was part of the first ever Liverpool team to win the FA Cup in 1965, sandwiched between the Championship successes of 1964 and 1966.
In 1966, there was also a European Cup Winners’ Cup appearance for Billy ias he returned ‘home’ to Hampden for the final. It was Borussia Dortmund who would emerge victorious on this occasion (after extra time), Liverpool having defeated Celtic in the semi final.
