Match Trivia
Ochiview Park, Stenhousemuir was the venue of this tie on Saturday, and the largest crowd that has witness a match in this district assembled within its confines. There would be about 8000 spectators present – a large proportion of whom, it is safe to say, saw very little of the game. The weather was good overhead, but the ground was to some extent covered by snow. Stenhousemuir won the toss, and decided to take advantage of the breeze with the sun behind them. Amidst the greatest excitement, the Rangers started the game five minutes late, and Hamilton and Walker carried the play towards Skene, where Walker was brought down. Midfield play followed, until McBride shot over. Again the Rangers returned to the charge, and Hamilton just missed by inches. In fact, the crowd thought a goal had been scored. With a rush, the ‘Muir quickly carried play towards Dickie, who had to rush out to save. Duff was cheered for the manner in which he brought up Hamilton when that player was in the act of shooting. Drummond at the other end, missed his kick, and instead of recovering he brought down T Clarkson, for which a free kick was granted, and the ‘Muir almost scored. Encouraged by their supporters, the home team warming to their work, and Rangers were at times sorely pressed, Dickie saving a warmer from T Clarkson. MacDonald shot true and hard at Skene, who had to save it at the expense of a corner, which was fruitless. A foul against the home team just outside the penalty line looked dangerous, but Skene cleared. A Smith, lying handy, got in one of his great shots, and the crowd shouted goal, but Skene was there and brought off a great save, for which he was cheered. The ‘Muir lads again took up the running, and Dickie was called upon to save shot after shot amidst the greatest excitement. From a foul, Walker got the chance of a lifetime, but he missed, and half-time was called with the teams on an equal footing – no scoring. After a short interval the ‘Muir re-started, and MacDonald forced a corner, which was however fruitless. Robertson got on about midfield, and waltzing round the whole defence of the home team, capped a great performance by sending the ball into goal Skene saved, but Hamilton was lying handy and scored. From the kick-off the home team were soon down on Dickie, who saved with the utmost difficulty. Away went MacDonald down the right, and centring to Hamilton, that player had no difficulty in beating Skene for the second time with an un-saveable shot. The Rangers were now playing with the utmost confidence. Smith just missed after a rousing run. Walker, after giving the ‘Muir backs the slip, drove hard and true, and Skene was beat, but the referee thought one of the home backs attempted to trip, and awarded a free kick against the Warriors instead of a goal for the Rangers. Hamilton scored number three, and Robertson placed the result beyond doubt by beating Skene for the fourth time with a shot of the game. The Rangers for some time completely outplayed the home team. Smith sent a grand shot across goal, which struck the bar and went out of play. Shortly before the finish, Stenhousemuir were rewarded by a goal – Lorne giving the ball the finishing touch. Result :- Rangers 4 goals; Stenhousemuir 1 goal
