Match Trivia

The long postponed League fixture between the St Mirren and Rangers came off on Saturday, before a large crowd of spectators at the ground of the St Mirren, Love Street, Paisley. The Saints kicked off most punctually. A little dodging about was indulged in by Taylor, Mullen and McKim, but the Rangers got first to business, and Barker had a shy at the Saints goal. The shot however, went past and the St Mirren ten initiated a series of most exciting runs. The forwards went off in great style, Wylie and Taylor banging the leather right and left amongst the Rangers defence. Wylie had a strong drive at Haddow’s charge, but the Light Blues custodian managed to clear. Back they came again and Mullen almost got the leather through. McPherson took the first point for the Rangers, catching up a long shot from Cowan, and sending it into Patrick in a style which entirely beat the Saints custodian, and put the Light Blues one up within twenty minutes from the start. It fell to the Saints to get the equaliser a few minutes later, when in the midst of a scrimmage, Drummond fouled the ball. Taylor took the kick, and banged it right against Mullen, who breasted through beautifully. The heavy ground began to toll on the players about the time, and the game slackened down a bit. Halftime – St Mirren 1: Rangers 1. Wylie initiated the second half by beating Haddow very cleverly, but much to the disappointment of the crowd offside was given. The Saints did most of the pressing this half, and had hard lines in not adding in their score. The game continued very fast, and at length the Saints got the leading point from a scrimmage, Mullen giving the ball the final touch. The Rangers came away in style after this, but notwithstanding all they could do, the Saints got in another point from Taylor, Haddow falling in attempting to save. With ten minutes to go the Saints got a fourth goal from Mullen. The Rangers at this point made a final effort, and Boyd after some splendid work got the ball past Patrick. The game thus ended in a win for the St Mirren by 4 goals to 2.
