Match Trivia
The Rangers started. Wylie caught up the ball, and had a rather weak pass into the Rangers territory, Gibson however cleared it, and Mitchell sent down a beauty, which Haig returned well. The ‘Light Blues’ then came off with run, McPherson and Oswald in front, and it was only by McBain tipping out that the Saints goal was saved. Back they came again, and a shot from Oswald caused Patrick some trouble. He managed to bustle it out, but McPherson caught it and returned, and it was only by lying on top of it, and literally handing the ball to Haig that Patrick saved his goal. The Rangers continued the pressure, but yet were unable to make anything of the Saints defence. The Saints then had a nice run, which was only spoiled by a bad finish up on the part of Stevenson, who shot very wide. The Rangers followed with a fine dash, and a nice piece of work at goalmouth A Smith scored, a return shot beating Patrick completely. The Saints, far from being discouraged, went at it with greater energy than ever, and the Rangers goal had a very narrow escape from one of Wylie’s shots. What looked like a second goal for the Blues came shortly afterwards, but it was only by a lucky chance that it did not go through, the ball striking the inside of the post and rebounding into play. Playing most determinedly, the Saints soon got on equal terms, little Morgan scoring from a scrimmage at goal. Something like play was now witnessed, both teams going at it in great spirit. The Rangers were still the faster and most accurate players of the two, but the Saints kick-and-run style of play paid the Saints, as before the game had half-an-hour they secured their second goal from Leonard, as the result of a rather fast piece of work at goalmouth. Play quietened down a little towards halftime, and at the interval the score stood – St Mirren 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. St Mirren started the pressure in the second portion, but although they had some very fair runs they did not make much of them, the Rangers defence being quite on their metal by this time, Smith and Crawford were in better form, and Dickie was more accurate between the sticks. About five minutes after the restart the Blues went off, to nice style, and a shot from Hyslop should have come off, but Haig intervened just as he was wanted and succeeded in clearing. The Saints as yet had the best of the play, but their further tried to improve their score were checkmated each time they made them, and the Ibrox team gradually began to gather round the Saints goal. A corner in their favour looked all right, and it proved to be so for A Smith placing it beautifully allowed Mitchell to put on the equalising point. The game then became more interesting. Some determined rushes were made by the home team, and from one of these Mullen nearly scored, and Dickie deserved all credit for the manner in which he saved. The game played remarkably well right to the finish. Result – A draw (2 goals each).
