Match Trivia
St Mirren started, and at once made a beautiful run into the Rangers territory. Wylie in the initial rush was very prominent, and as the result of his efforts had a swift drive at Dickie charge, which the Rangers goalkeeper turned aside in time. The home team were playing a fine driving game and as yet Patrick had only been once challenged. The defence of the Light Blues however was capital, and the home forwards could not get the ball past them. Several times the Rangers got away, and on one occasion especially McPherson had a narrow escape of scoring, his parting effort just missing the post. At length the St Mirren were awarded a corner, but May placed wrongly, and enabled the Rangers to get away again. They did not make much of their chance this time, and were easily repulsed. They however soon came back, and Turnbull with a beautiful shot, beat Patrick, and scored the first goal for the Rangers. A minute afterwards Low put another shot, which gave the Ibrox team the second goal. Rangers kept up the pressure till halftime, but no further scoring occurred. Soon after the start of the second portion the St Mirren were awarded a penalty kick, and the greatest excitement prevailed. Wylie took the kick, and to the consternation of all present he shot high over the bar. This was a keen disappointment to the home players, and seemed to break up their efforts altogether. Soon afterwards than had another capital chance, but Wylie made a bad miss, and left matters as they were. Several of the St Mirren players were now done, and the Rangers were simply walking round them. Once or twice the home team came away with spasmodic sprints, but their combination was entirely lost, and the ultimate success they had was in securing a corner, which May – who, by the way, was lame at this time, out too line, and sent behind. A little afterwards McPherson added goal number three for the Rangers. Keeping up the pressure, the Rangers worked hard, but at length another penalty was given. Greenlees took the kick, and this time there was no mistake, the ball going clean through, Dickie being quite unable to save. Immediately afterwards another penalty kick was given, this time in favour of Rangers. McPherson was the chosen man, but Patrick was too smart for him, and the shot was cleared. Just before time Hamilton scored a fourth goal for the Rangers, and a minute afterwards Turnbull scored a fifth. Result – Rangers 5: St Mirren 1.
