Match Trivia
These teams met at Love Street Grounds, Paisley in first League fixture before a large crowd of spectators. Oswald started for the Rangers, and were soon down on Patrick’s charge. A shot from McPherson caused St Mirren custodian to do a lively piece of work. He kept cool however, and although the ground in the neighbourhood of his goal was dangerously slippery, he managed to evade the challenge of McCreadie, and get the ball sent forward amongst his own men. Wylie got hold of it, and passed to Murray, after which Taylor sent in a shot, which was within an ace of beating McLeod. As it was the Rangers man had to concede a corner to save his charge. Murray who took the kick, shot past. The Saints looked like scoring, but at length the strangers got the leather away, and McPherson had a clear run down the field, which he capped by scoring the first goal of the match, beating Patrick with a beautiful shot. The St Mirren lads then put a little more spirit into the game. Mullen and Milliken made play lively in the Rangers front rank, and McCreadie, McPherson and Oswald were too much for them. The Rangers then got a foul 20 yards from the Saints goal, but the ball was banged through without coming into contact with anyone. The Saints from the return once more took up the running, and some fine midfield play took place between the teams. Wylie at length got possession of the leather and worked it well up, throwing off Stewart, who challenged him, and passed to Milliken. The latter player then put in a stinger, which McLeod was unable to stop, and thus the teams were placed on equal terms. Things however were not destined to remain in this state long. The Rangers after a nice bit of by-play, once more got into close quarters with the Saints custodian, and Smith with rather a soft shot, got their second goal. As halftime approached the play grew even harder, and a corner for the Saints looked dangerous, but was spoiled by Taylor shooting past. They got a foul, which again proved fruitless, the leather passing through without touching. From the kick-off Rangers got away with a fine run, and succeeded in getting a third goal from Oswald. Halftime – Rangers 3 goals: St Mirren 1 goal. The St Mirren started the second half in great spirits. Murray had a fine run which ended in a corner. The kick was beautifully placed, and only for a fluke the Light Blues goal should have fallen. From a scrimmage the St Mirren had the ball at McLeod, and to return it into play he had to go within his goal line by fully a yard. St Mirren claimed a goal, but the referee refused it, as he had not noticed McLeod within his goal line. After this the St Mirren were pretty unlucky in not bringing off in a successful manner any of their numerous chances. The Rangers were more fortunate. Three additional goals were added in rapid succession by Smith, who had played finely throughout. Nearing time McCreadie secured a seventh. The match in which the Paisley club was very unfortunate, ended – Rangers 7 goals: St Mirren 1 goal.
