Match Trivia

The ground at Westmarch, Paisley was in a deplorably soft condition on Saturday, when St Mirren and Rangers met to play off their League fixture, but weather notwithstanding, the supporters of both teams were out in full force. Rangers started and the St Mirren with the wind behind them immediately began pressing. McBain with one of his steady shots sent the ball well down the field. It was taken up by Brash and Smith, and after fine passing by Brown, White and Smith; Mullen got a long drive at the Rangers goal and succeeded in beating Haddow. McLean also had a share in the taking of this point, as he assisted in getting the ball through when it looked as if Haddow might have a chance of saving. The Light Blues came away strongly from the re-start, and Barker, McPherson and Boyd kept up some dashing play, which ultimately ended in Boyd beating Patrick, and putting the teams on equal terms. The Rangers made another strong effort to score, but without effect and as the first half drew near to a close Crawford put St Mirren in the ascendant with a magnificent shot which he put right from the centre line, which Haddow was totally unable to save. At halftime the score still stood – St Mirren 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. Without leaving the field the teams started the second half. The Rangers at once commenced pressing, and Patrick was repeatedly called upon to save, which he did successfully. Barker, McPherson and Gray put in some grand work, but their shots were mostly carried wide. The Saints then got a fine breakaway run, which however gave them no advantage, and the game for some time after this merged practically into a defence one on the part of the Westmarch team. At length the Rangers got in the equalising point, Gray putting in the ball, and Crawford in trying to save sending it through his own goal. Brash on the Saints right, got a splendid run all to himself, which looked rather dangerous, but his parting shot went over by several inches. The Rangers then came back to the attack, and for a time the Saints defence had their work cut out for them, but no further scoring took place, and the game ended in a draw of 2 goals each.
