Match Trivia
The St Mirren and the Rangers had a friendly tussle at Westmarch on Saturday before not less than between 300 and 400 spectators. The ground was hard but a slight shower in the forenoon had made the top soft and slippery, nevertheless a really good game was the outcome. The Saints were the first to score from a miss-kick by McHardy, Chalmers somehow or other miss-judging the ball and allowing it to slip easily past him. The light blues after a bit of good play, made the score equal. Both sides worked hard but the game continued equal. A minute from halftime a foul was given against the strangers about thirty yards from goal. Paterson took the kick and placing it nicely, Harper had little difficulty in heading No. 2 for the Saints. The right about was sounded with the score Saints 2 Rangers 1. The second half was a repetition of the first, both sides worked very hard. The Saints however obtained another goal by the aid of Johnstone and the game ended in favour of the St Mirren by 3 goals to 1. For the winners Craig at goal played exceptionally well and the Change is a good one. Cheyne at back for a young player did some smart things. Of the backs, Paterson and Hutchieson at half were at their best and the victory was principally due to them. Of the forwards Johnstone, Fairlie, and Gilmour were best the others not playing their usual game? For the Rangers Chalmers with the exception of the one mistake, kept goal well. Both McHardy and Cherrie we have seen to more advantage. The two half’s, however played a splendid game. Of the forwards Cook, Gossland and Pringle were the pick, although Sommerville in the centre played very well. The teams afterwards adjourned to the Globe and spent a pleasant evening together.
