Match Trivia
Most of the good play was seen in the match at Paisley was crowded into the second half. The ground had been liberally strewn with sand, but did not offer too sure a footing. With the start of the closing portion caution was thrown to the winds, and the players going into their work in whole-hearted fashion provided a splendid finish to an otherwise dull game. The result correctly indicated the merits of the teams, although the Saints perhaps pressed oftenest. But they never were any nearer scoring a goal than the Rangers, their shooting being very often at fault. With fewer opportunities the Light Blues were quite as dangerous, and Rae was as often called on as Newbigging. The forwards play, however keen never touched as high standard, the halves on either side invariably nipping in the bud any attempt at sustained combination. McFie got in some cute passed to Alex Smith who, however was too frequently found in an off-side position. Notwithstanding this blemish the veteran was just, about the best forward a field, and had Anderson crossed as Smith did, instead of shooting from impossible angles, the Saints might have won. Livingstone put in some fine touches, and gave Kivlichan every chance to shine. The latter was eager throughout and gave Crawford a deal of trouble. Spiers combined better than Wylie, Cunningham and Gray did very well, while Hamilton was sprightly at outside right. On the other extreme Anderson was most disappointing. The half-back play was the feature of the game. Stark, Gray and Robertson in the order named, were the most noticeable of the six, who all did splendidly. At back there was little to choose between the sides with Jackson the best of the four.
