Match Trivia
These teams met on Saturday at Love Street Ground, Paisley. The game should have been under first League auspices, but owing to the state of the ground, a friendly only was played. Saints started the game. The Rangers at once rushed off, headed by Cowan and Boyd, and after a little preliminary kicking, Cowan succeeded in getting the leather past Patrick. The Saints broke away, and amidst the enthusiasm of the spectators succeeded in making their way up to Haddow quarters. The heavy ground, however impeded their play, and twice the ball was sent past. Keeping at it, they gave Haddow with his two sturdy backs, lots of trouble, Brown, Mackie and Taylor seeming to have the better of the Rangers defence. Their efforts however were fruitless, and the Rangers once more got the leather down to Patrick’s charge. By a mistake McBain lost possession of the ball, and Cowan taking it up smartly, notched the second point for Rangers. Making something like a determined show, the St Mirren players then succeeded in qualifying matters a little by getting a point from Taylor. In less than another minute Mullen had a brilliant run, the whole length of the field, which ended in him scoring the equaliser for the Saints. As the result of a scrimmage the ball was got through a third time by the St Mirren men, but Mr Rooney gave offside. McCreadie secured the third goal for the Rangers from a corner kick. Halftime result – Rangers 3 goals: St Mirren 2 goals. After a short interval the teams commenced again. The Saints were the first to press, and in the opening stages, Haddow was twice called upon. The Saints however could not get an opening. At this point of the game Gibson the Rangers centre half, got his left knee injured, and had to leave the field. Lay dragged on in a most monochrome manner after this, neither team doing anything worthy of special mention. The close of the game was splendidly contested, considering the difficulties the teams had to contest against. A spirited attack was maintained by Brown, McBain and Taylor on the Rangers goal, but Haddow, Smith and Drummond were not to be beaten. Gibson of Rangers dos not resume play. Brown equalised amidst great cheering. The St Mirren were now having the most of the game, but from an unexpected fall off the Rangers got a fourth point taken by Barker. Result – Rangers 4 goals: St Mirren 3 goals.
