Match Trivia
On Tuesday evening a complimentary benefit match was played on the St Mirren Grounds on behalf of Donald Greenlees between teams representing St Mirren and Rangers. There was a flattering turnout of onlookers. St Mirren played three juniors in place of Rae, McAvoy and Lynch, otherwise the team was at full strength. Rangers had out their full League eleven. In the opening half both sides showed some really pretty football, and seemed well matched. Rangers opened the scoring through McFie, and at the interval led by 1 goal to 0. The second half found the Rangers the stronger side, and McFie added other two goals before time arrived, the Rangers thus winning by 3 to 0. The Saints’ three young recruits all played well. McCullum at outside right put in some splendid shots in the first half, and might have done even better had he received a little more of the ball. Thomson in goal had some grand saves, one in the first half gaining for him a good round of applause. The third goal put past him ought never to been allowed, as it was most glaringly fisted into the net. Lochhead played an untiring game at left half, and would improve with time in first-class company. Towards the close of the game the Rangers indulged in some ‘trick’ football, and at time rather non-paused a few of the Saints. The game, which was one of thirty-five minutes each way, was much enjoyed by the audience
