Match Trivia
A large crowd was present at the Recreation Ground Perth, last night to witness the match between the St Johnstone and the Glasgow Rangers. The weather was fair, and the ground was in splendid order. The Rangers led by RC Hamilton, were awarded a cordial reception. The Saints, by robust tactics soon got to Ritchie’s quarter, and the Rangers custodian had to fist out several likely shots. Hamilton tested McPherson with a low swift shot, which was successfully negotiated. The Rangers forwards’ shoed rare combination, but the home backs played a sturdy game. Getting the ball near midfield Robertson, the internationalist halfback raced off, and out-stripping the Saints backs opened the scoring the ball striking McPherson in its passing through. The Saints worked well, J Smith tested Ritchie with a good drive, but although a corner was conceded nothing resulted. Doig created some amusement by trying to ‘grass’ Nick Smith, the small left winger coming a ‘cropper’. Moir was pulled up for offside when in a likely position. McPherson saved cleverly at the corner post, and for a time it looked as if the Rangers would score. From a runaway, Moir scored a pretty foal for the Saints a minute before halftime, Ritchie falling all his length in endeavouring to save. Halftime – St Johnstone 1: Rangers 1. In the second half the Saints played up in a surprising fashion, and for a time hemmed the Rangers to their own goal. The Rangers forwards indulged in some fine passing work, and towards the close they pressed severely. From a corner kick beautifully placed by A Smith, J Duncan sent in a shot, which beat Ritchie. The game ended – St Johnstone 2: Rangers 1.
