Match Trivia
Had the Perth Saints accepted all the scoring chances that came their way in this game, their name might have been written large on the scroll of fame. My notes contain several references to scoring chances that were literally thrown away by the Perth attackers in the second half. Beattie, who was continually in the limelight with his menacing dashes, thrice stalled off the Rangers challengers only to fail at the critical moment. Ferguson and Tennant were equally at fault after cleverly manoeuvring for and obtaining perfect scoring position. But let us condone these failings for each of the three players I have mentioned played a big part in a meritorious performance and a well deserved Saints victory. The Muirton men have hitherto been eulogises for their efforts to confine themselves, to dainty and spectacular football, but on this occasion the introduced a spice of dash and abandon which repeatedly upset the calculation of the men from Ibrox. Right from the start, Beattie was on his toes and his solo darts and barging methods kept the Ibrox defenders on tenterhooks. His colleagues assimilated some of his ideas and the result was that the Rangers were never allowed to settle down to sustained concerted moving. Yet, it was an intensely interesting and, at times, thrilling game one of the most exciting I have seen for many a day. Both keepers were repeatedly tested with Dawson having the more difficult shots with which to deal. The Saints had the pull at back, Welsh and Taylor giving a fine exposition of sound defensive tactics. Moulds kept a tight rein on Smith and Mason was the best constructive half on view. Beattie, Harry Ferguson and Tennant were the shinning lights in a business-like Perth attack. In a Rangers side, which failed to produce its best form, Dawson and Gray were steady and reliable, but the half-backs were knocked off their stride by the dash and cleverness of the Perth attack. Venters and Roberts formed the better wing. A wors about the goals. Two minutes after the interval, A Ferguson turned a Tennant corner to account, and Six minutes later Beattie capped a clever movement by Harry Ferguson.
