Match Trivia
A large crowd, representing £193 taken at the gates, assembled at Logie Green to witness the opening League match of the season. The game throughout was less one-sided than the score indicates, and had St Bernards players been more experienced they might have finished differently. The visitor’s forwards opened strongly. End to end play ensured. A clever manoeuvre of Miller’s ended in him scoring the first goal of the match. McMillan was shortly afterwards offered a good chance of equalising, but after covering the ground in clever style he shot high over the bar. Hamilton scored again, through Robertson slipping. The point was cleverly taken; bit as Adams had rushed forwards Russell no chance of saving. The Saints had another opportunity of improving their position when Smith gave a corner, but though all were in a cluster round the goal little Neil carried the ball right through them. The Saints back play, which had promised so well, fell away, and the Rangers treated the spectators to the novelty of clearing a corner kick and scoring from the run up. Hamilton was again successful operator, he being given a clear field and offered an open goal. The Rangers continued to hold the upper hand, and Russell’s charge had some remarkable escape. The halftime result was – Rangers 3 goals: St Bernards 0. Very early in the second half the Rangers came dangerously near scoring, but the Saints cleared and forced a corner, which was result less. Give and take play followed, but at last the Rangers again got down and thanks to the blundering of the opposing backs, Hyslop scored a good goal. With the visitors holding a substantial lead the game was as good as over, and though the Saints had the best of the play during the remaining 15 minutes they met with a defence, which could not be successfully broken. Final scores – Rangers 4 goals: St Bernards 2 goals.
