Match Trivia

A regular holiday crowd of about 10,000 witnessed this match at Southampton on Easter Monday, when the Scottish cracks were opposed by a medium team of Saints, the Rangers being at full strength bar Hamilton. The opening quarter of an hour was sufficient to show that the spectators were in for the game of the season. Play was terrifically fast and always interesting, first Robinson and then Dickie being tested with stinging shot, both custodians however, being equal to the emergency. The Rangers were quicker on the ball and more tricky, but the Saints proved deadly tacklers. After twenty minutes fast work the Saints seemed to get the better of the visitors for a time, and some lovely passing by the Saints quintet saw Yates and Seeley both send in clinking shots. Chadwick was playing a magnificent game, as indeed were all the Saints back division. At length the Rangers again broke away on the right, a good effort being spoiled by Campbell being offside. Then the Saints pressed again, and a lovely chance was missed by Wood off Seeley’s pass. Chadwick’s long pots gave Dickie an anxious time. About now the Saints had some grand chances, but the old fault was prevalent, viz., weak shooting when in front of goal. Smith got winded as the result of a bout with Seeley, but soon resumed. The Saints forced a corner, and were fairly penning the Rangers for a time. Then the visitors relieved the pressure, and some fast up and down work was seen, Dickie being however called on more frequently than Robinson. It seemed evident that victory would go to the team that stayed the best, and the terrific pace at which the game was fought was beginning to tell on both sides. Halftime was very welcome to both sides, and the score was a blank.
