Alex joined Rangers from Dunfermline Athletic in the close season of 1966 for a fee of £55,000 and made his debut at Ibrox on 13th August as Hibernian were defeated 1-0 in the League Cup (namesake Dave would make his debut in the same match but the players were not related). Alex’s first goal for Rangers came when the two sides met in the return tie at Easter Road.
His debut season, 1966/67, would prove to be his most productive spell as he netted a credible 23 goals in 55 appearances to finish as our top scorer. It proved to be a trophyless and traumatic one for the Club following defeat to Berwick Rangers in the Scottish Cup, a game which Smith started. He was also in the starting line up for the European Cup Winner’s Cup Final later that year.
In all, Alex played 69 times for Rangers scoring 26 goals before moving on in the summer of 1969.
