Season Summary 1955 - 56

This was an impressive season for Rangers as they romped to their 29th League Championship success, so giving Scot Symon his first major honour with the club as manager.
While there was disappointment in the Cup competitions, the style in which the Light Blues lifted the flag made up for it in the fans' eyes.
After a slow start, which saw the Ibrox men win only one of their first six fixtures, they embarked on an unbeaten League run of 23 games from November 5, 1955 until April 7, 1956- and that was enough to ensure them of the title.
They clinched the flag from their nearest challengers, defending champs Aberdeen, at Ibrox when Alex Scott scored the only goal of the game. At 19 years of age, winger Scott was already a firm favourite with the fans.
There was also the delight of a New Year's Day victory over Celtic at Parkhead when popular South African Don Kichen- brand scored the only goal of the game.
Another South African, Johnny Hubbard, saw a remarkable run come to an end that season on January 28 at Broomfield when he missed from the penalty spot for the first time in seven years and 23 kicks.
Once the title was won, some of the edge went off Rangers' game and in the final League match of the season they lost 1-0 to Clyde at Ibrox, bringing an end to a two year unbeaten home run which stretched from April 17, 1954 until April 28, 1956. The season also saw Rangers play their first League match under floodlights at Ibrox, when they annihilated Queen of the South 8-0.
In the Scottish Cup, Rangers were crushed 4-0 by Hearts at Tynecastle in the quarter-final but took some consolation from the fact that the Edinburgh men went on to win the trophy, beating Celtic 3-1 in the Final.
The Light Blues also lost out in the League Cup to the eventual winners. Aberdeen beat them 2-1 in the semi-final and went on to defeat St. Mirren by the same scoreline in the Final.
Rangers lost their grip on the Charity Cup when they went out on the toss of a coin to Third Lanark in the first round and in the Glasgow Cup they were defeated by Celtic in the Final after a replay.
At the end of the season, Rangers parted company with three great servants - Willie Woodburn, Willie Waddell and Sammy Cox, who had shared in many great triumphs together in Light Blue jerseys.
