This was new manager Scot Symon's first full season in charge of Rangers and, while it was a disappointment as far as trophies went, the seeds of something good were clearly being sown.
Rangers were the only team in Britain undefeated at home- but unfortunately they couldn't match that form on their travels and the eight away games they lost cost them their chance of winning the League Championship.
Aberdeen took the title, ahead of the 'Old Firm' and it was a strange feature of Rangers' season that they managed to record victories over the winners of all the domestic competitions.
They defeated the Dons 3-1, Scottish Cup winners Clyde 1-0 and League Cup victors Hearts 2-1. Partick Thistle, who lifted the Glasgow Cup, were beaten 3-1 and the Light Blues also crushed League runners-up Celtic 4-1 for good measure.
The only silverware which arrived at Ibrox that season was the Charity Cup. Rangers defeated Third Lanark 3-1 at Ibrox in the first round, Celtic 1-0 at Parkhead in the semi-final and then beat Queen's Park 3-1 in the Hampden Final.
In the two main Cup competitions, Rangers lost out at the quarter final stages. They went down 2-1 to Aberdeen in a hard-fought match at Pittodrie in the Scottish Cup which was played in freezing conditions.
In the League Cup, the Light Blues topped their qualifying section but lost at the last eight to Motherwell on a 3-2 aggregate. The Fir Park side went on to the Final where they were beaten by Hearts.
The season was also notable for a number of floodlit friendlies played by Rangers, both at Ibrox and away from Scotland.
The British Army (3-0), Rapid Vienna (1-0) and Racing Club of Paris (5-1) were all beaten at Ibrox but Manchester City came north to inflict a 4-1 defeat on Rangers.
Scot Symon took his players to Highbury where they drew 3-3 with Arsenal; Belfast where they beat Linfield 2-0 and finally to Paris for a return with Racing, who got their revenge with a 4-1 triumph.
On the international front, only George Young and Willie Waddell were capped for Scotland. They were controversially dropped from the match against England which the Scots lost 7-2.
