This was a super season for Rangers as they regained the League Championship in another close battle with Hibs and also added the Scottish Cup after a dramatic final against Aberdeen.
The Easter Road side, defending the title they had prised from Rangers in the previous two seasons, once again set a hot early pace, but this time the Light Blues kept up with them and it was neck-and-neck all the way.
Clashes between the clubs went in Hibs' favour as they won 2-1 at Ibrox with the Easter Road clash being drawn 1-1.
However, when the final fortnight of the season approached, Hibs completed their fixtures with a 4-1 win over Raith Rovers which gave them a final total of 43 points from 30 matches.
That put them three ahead of Rangers, who had two matches left to play – and the Ibrox players knew they could take three points from those two games and win the flag on goal average.
The first was against Dundee at Ibrox on May 2 and Rangers were in fine form to win 3-1 with goals from Derek Grierson (2) and Billy Simpson.
That meant the destination of the League flag would be decided at Palmerston Park five days later, with Rangers needing just a point to edge out Hibs.
When Queen of the South took an early lead and then grimly hung on to it, things looked black for Rangers and their huge travelling support. But a late goal from Willie Waddell earned a 1-1 draw and Rangers were champions for the 28th time, courtesy of a goal average difference of .227.
Rangers' progress in the Scottish Cup was highly impressive as they defeated Arbroath (4-0) at Ibrox, Dundee (2-0) at Dens Park, Morton (4-1) at Cappielow, Celtic (2-0) at Ibrox and Hearts (2-1) at Hampden in the semi-final.
Aberdeen were their opponents in the Final and 129,761 fans were inside Hampden to see the teams draw 1-1, with John Prentice opening the scoring for Rangers in the 12th minute and Benny Yorston equalising for the Dons in the 83rd.
That meant a replay on Wednesday, April 29 and this time 113,700 people saw Rangers lift the Scottish Cup for the 14th time, thanks to Billy Simpson scoring the only goal of the match.
With the reserves winning their League Championship, the only real disappointment for Rangers came in the League Cup, where they lost out in the semi-final to Kilmarnock, due to a freak late goal when a clearance from Johnny Little hit Killie striker Jack and entered the Rangers net.
The Light Blues also took part in the special Coronation Cup, which was won by Celtic, and a crowd of 75,000 watched them lose their only game in the tournament 2-1 to Manchester United.
