This was to prove another magical season for Rangers as they lifted the League Championship for the 27th time and completed a hat-trick of successive Scottish Cup triumphs for the second time in their history.
The race for the First Division title was once again a tight battle between the Light Blues and Hibs, with the outcome not known until the very last match of the season.
Rangers had gone through their fixtures suffering only two defeats - a narrow 1-0 reverse against Hibs at Easter Road plus a shock 4-0 loss to Motherwell at Fir Park.
Hibs visited Ibrox for their last fixture of the season in April with only three defeats behind them – two against city rivals Hearts and the other shock home loss to Third Lanark.
Rangers were level on points with the Edinburgh men but had another match left against Third Lanark at Cathkin Park. Hibs had to win at Ibrox therefore to take the title as their goal average was superior to Rangers.
A crowd of over 100,000 turned up at Ibrox for what proved to be a tension-ridden affair and it was no surprise that the teams trooped into the dressing-rooms after 90 minutes having failed to score.
That meant Rangers needed only to draw in midweek against Third Lanark to take the title for the third time in four seasons and they did just that, sharing four goals with the Cathkin men.
Rangers path to the Scottish Cup Final was far from an easy one, either, and after knocking-out Motherwell (4-2) at Fir Park and Cowdenbeath (8-0) at Ibrox they were taken to three matches by Raith Rovers, eventually winning 2-0 in the second replay at Ibrox.
Queen of the South were the Light Blues' semi-final opponents and it took a Hampden replay for Bill Struth's side to defeat the Palmerston club 3-0.
Rangers' opponents in the final were the vastly- improved East Fife who were managed by former Ibrox player Scot Symon.
The Bayfield club had knocked Rangers out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage earlier in the season before going on to win the trophy, so there was more than a hint of revenge in the air for the Light Blues.
Willie Findlay gave Rangers the perfect start with a goal after only 26 seconds and a double from Willie Thornton completed a 3-0 triumph which emulated the hat-trick achieved in 34, 35 and 36.
The winning line-up was: Bobby Brown, George Young, Jock Shaw, lan McColl, Willie Woodburn, Sammy Cox, Eddie Rutherford, Willie Findlay, Willie Thornton, Jimmy Duncanson, Willie Rae.
Rangers also won the Glasgow Cup, beating Clyde 2-1 after extra time in the Hampden final, but lost 3-2 to Celtic in the Charity Cup Final.
