This was a season when Rangers made Scottish football history by becoming the first club to achieve the magical 'treble' of lifting the League Championship, Scottish Cup and League Cup in the one term.
The all-conquering Light Blues hardly began, mind you, in the sort of form which suggested they would win anything at all!
In their League Cup qualifying section, Rangers failed to win one of their first three matches against Celtic, Clyde and Hibs. There seemed to be no chance of the Ibrox men reaching the quarter-final stages of the tournament.
However, they picked themselves up and in the return games with Celtic, Clyde and Hibs they took full points. Celtic lost to Clyde at Parkhead and then Hibs at Easter Road and Rangers found themselves in the last eight.
Willie Thornton scored the only goal of a tight quarter-final clash against St. Mirren at Love Street but Dundee were crushed 4-1 in the semi at Hampden to set up a final meeting with Raith Rovers.
The Kirkcaldy men battled hard but Rangers were just too good for them and goals from Torry Gillick and Willie Paton earned a 2-0 victory.
The line-up was: Brown, Young, Shaw, McColl, Woodburn, Cox, Gillick, Paton, Thornton, Duncanson, Rutherford.
That League Cup triumph gave the Ibrox players bags of confidence and they showed fine form in the League race. As the closing weeks of the season approached, it was neck and neck at the top between Rangers and Dundee.
The Dens Park men were concentrating solely on the League Championship, having been knocked out of the Scottish Cup at the semi-final stage. Rangers were in the final where they faced Clyde, struggling to avoid relegation from the First Division.
The Shawfield men provided a stiff test in the final nonethe- less, but Rangers eventually overpowered them 4-1. George Young scored twice from the penalty spot with Billy Williamson and Jimmy Duncanson netting the others.
The line-up was: Brown, Young, Shaw, McColl, Woodburn, Cox, Waddell, Duncanson, Thornton, Willlamson, Rutherford. The League Championship was now all that stood between Rangers and the 'treble'.
On Saturday, April 30 – the last day of the season Dundee were playing Falkirk at Brockville while Rangers took on Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill. The Dens men were leading Rangers by a point at the top of the table.
The Light Blues simply had to hope that Dundee would slip up against Falkirk while they defeated Albion Rovers. It hap- pened! As Rangers crushed Rovers 4-1, Falkirk beat Dundee and the title went to Ibrox.
The only disappointment for Rangers came in the Glasgow Cup and Charity Cup as they lost out to Third Lanark and Partick Thistle respectively – but that was a minor setback in one of the club's most successful seasons ever.
