Match Trivia

In continuation of their Scottish tour, Woolwich Albion appeared at Ibrox Park last night – the game, which was ‘friendly’ in every sense of the term, ending in a draw of one goal each. Two thousand spectators were present. The players did not take matters too seriously, and contented themselves with displaying a good dell of trick work and close dribbling. Several of them appeared as if they were desirous of inverting new moves, but ultimately discovered that the more orthodox methods were of more profit in the long run. Two juniors were on trial in the London team – Stirling (Clydebank) at outside right and Hastie (Ashfield) at inside left. Neither impressed the spectators greatly, although Hastie did some clever things. Both gaols were scored in the first half, when the Arsenal played with a strong breeze behind them. Lewis got the visitors goal with a hard drive from within the penalty area; and Campbell who eassayed the outside left position, scored for the Rangers, after Ashcroft had let drop a swift volley from Speirs. During the latter period, the Light Blues centre had the best shot of the match, the ball striking the upright with the international custodian beaten. The Rangers had practically all the game in the second half, Sharp and Craig seldom allowing the Arsenal forwards to get near Newbigging. The strong returns of the backs on both sides – there were three internationals in the quartets (Sharp, Gray and Craig) – were a feature of the game. In other division the Rangers were best served by Taylor, Barrie, Speirs and McDonald and the Arsenal by Bigdon, Lewis and Neave.
