Match Trivia
The opening match of the season was played on Kinning Park, the ground of the Rangers on Saturday afternoon, and between 1500 and 1600 persons turned out to witness the contest, the result of which was considered as likely to be in favour of the Vale team. The ball was set agoing by the Rangers, and some good play, it was evident would be seen before the close of the game. Indeed only ten minutes had elapsed ere the goal the goal of the strangers was surrounded and a shot from Marshall sent the ball through the posts, the spectators receiving the announcement with repeated shouts of approval. The Vale players are held in such respect in Football circles that only few clubs are able to make a respectable appearance in the field against them, and the Rangers are to be complemented on the bold front shown by them on Saturday. The play afterwards became hard, the Vale team striving to regain lost ground, but all to no purpose, as after some good runs and counter kicks, the ball was again put through the strangers lines, strengthening the impression that the Rangers had made some improvements in their play from that shown last year. The ball however was several times almost through the Rangers goal, but as Watt cleverly averted each attack, the repeated assaults of the Vale players were repulsed. Half time being called the teams changed ends, and long runs and hard kicking on both sides prevailed for some time. Indeed it was only towards the finish that McPherson breasted the ball through for the Vale. Several attempts were afterwards made on both sides to score, a run by P Campbell for the Rangers being much admired and well executed, and almost proving an additional goal to his side. But time was called ere any more were secured, and the game finished Rangers 2 Vale of Leven 1. Baird, McDougall, McPherson and the two McIntyres played well for the strangers; while P Campbell, Vallance, Marshall and W McNeil were conspicuous in their exertions for the Rangers
