Match Trivia

This event, the leading one in the city, took place at Ibrox Park, Govan, in presence of about 6000 spectators, and ended in a draw, with no scoring on either side. The weather was dry and bracing, with a good breeze blowing. The strangers had the wind in their favour for the first round, and their opponents through Robin, kicked off. The ball was soon brought up in dangerous proximity to the Rangers goal by a good return in the part of the Vale of Leven forwards, and Bruce had a close shy at the place of defence. For some time the Vale of Leven did some smart work in front of the Rangers sticks, and twice the ball was scrimmaged over the lines, and in both cases the goalkeeper had to kick out in front. The Vale however, had hard lines in not scoring, but their is no doubt about it the back play of the Rangers was good. At length the Rangers relieved their lines, and from a smart return by Gow came away in a brilliant forward run, and with the wind in their teeth got the ball close in on the Vale of Leven goal, where after some manoeuvring Muir had a shy that went over the bar. After Wilson had kicked off, the leather was kept pretty near the Vale of Leven posts for a time, but eventually the Dumbartonshire men shook off their opponents and a fine run was made by the forwards, for whom Rankin led the way, and McIntyre had to concede a corner. The shot from the corner was good one, but the ball was cleared away by Hay, only to be again returned, and another corner-flag kick was the result. In the scrimmage the ball hit the bar and bounded into play, and was eventually scrimmaged behind. One of the Rangers backs was the aggressor, and this gave the Leven men another corner-flag kick. Nicol had the shot, but in the scrimmage the ball went over the goal. Only a few minutes of the first round now remained to go, and the Vale of Leven worked hard to score, but although the Rangers were very hard pressed, and had to submit to a couple of corner-flag kicks, no scoring occurred, and the teams changed ends on equal terms. The Rangers had now the wind in their favour, and immediately after the kick-off attacked the Vale of Leven goal. A free-kick about 20 yards from the goal assisted the home team wonderfully, and the ball was scrimmaged near the right post, but before the invaders could take any advantage the ball was cleared away. After this the Rangers had a corner-flag kick, but although the ball came pretty close from the posts the Leven men behaved wonderfully well at goal, and saved. After this the visitors had a good run up the field, and Walker made some progress towards the Rangers goal. His progress was however, considerably interfered with by Gow, and in a scrimmage the ball was cleared up to the middle of the field. The Rangers were again in it however, and completely invaded Vale of Leven territory till as shy from Wyllie was only prevented from going under the bar by fine goalkeeping. At length the Leven team raised the siege, and from that the Rangers goalkeeper had to chuck out. Not long after this the Rangers again prevailed, and a very close run by Muir ended in the Vale having to give a corner-flag kick, but the ball was sent away once again. After this the Vale came away nicely and obtained two corner-flag kicks. The goal was hard pressed, but no scoring occurred although after the last the Rangers goalkeeper had to drop the ball and got it away, and turned the tide of invasion. The play was now at the Vale of Leven end, and twice the stranger’s fortress had narrow shaves. After a corner-flag kick the Rangers again pressed and Wilson had to chuck away the ball. In the closing scene of the contest the Vale of Leven backs behaved very well, and despite the fast play of the Rangers forwards that team were unable to score, and when time was called not a single point had been gained on either side, so that the match will have to played over again at Alexandra.
