Match Trivia
This match was played at the ground of the former, and resulted in a win for the home team by three goals to two. The ground was rather soft and heavy on account of the rain which fell during the night. The Rangers won the toss and kicked off. At the start they carried the ball tight up the field, but did not score, it being kicked behind the goal line. From the kick-out the strangers dribbled the ball across the field, and while in the Rangers territory had a good few chances to score. D Gow however relieved by a strong kick. In a few minutes the Vale again pressed, but were repelled, McIntyre afterwards had a fine run up the centre, but the parting shot was unsuccessful. The Vale of Leven getting the ball made a combined rush, and besieged the Rangers goal, and Ritchie had some hard work in keeping it intact. McMillan made a long shot which however, was lifted higher than was measure by the wind, and was deposited behind the goal line. The leather was now kept in the vicinity of the Rangers goal, but after a few minutes it was again sent behind by Baird. A fine combined rush was made by the Rangers, and the goal of the visitors was surrounded. After some scrimmaging McIntyre sent the ball through, thus making the first point of the game. The kick-off did not seem to relieve the Vale much for in a short time McIntyre and Wyllie returned to the charge, but Paton getting the ball made a fine run up the centre, but was stopped by Murray. The Vale of Leven were now playing a very steady game, and several times they almost baffled Ritchie. Towards the end of the half however, Wyllie managed to score another goal for the Rangers. Nettled at the reverse the Vale of Leven pressed with energy, and at last managed to score a goal by Paton. Halftime was now called and the score stood – Rangers two goals; Vale of Leven one goal. The teams crossed over without delay, and the game re-started with spirit. The Rangers pressed, but could not do anything on account of the steady play of the stranger’s backs – Whitelaw and Murray. After some smart play the game became more even, and runs were made on both sides, Paton and McMillan broke away, and a fine run between then managed to score a goal, thus equalising the game. On the ball being kicked off again the Rangers pressed, but the ball was eventually sent behind. After some even play the Rangers managed to get in close proximity to the strangers goal, where some scrimmaging ensured. Shortly before time a goal was scored by Wyllie of the Rangers by a fine shot, thus making the score Rangers 3 goals; Vale of Leven 2 goals.
