Match Trivia
These teams met in their last match of the League competition at Ibrox Park, Govan. Considerable interest was manifested in the event, the attendance of spectators numbering close as 6000. The weather was excellent, being if anything rather warm for the players. The Rangers had to substitute Muir and McIntyre for Hodge and McCreadie, just who are on the injured list. Winning the toss the Third played with the wind in their favour and facing the sun. They were first to press, but not for long. Play was soon transferred to the other end, where McKenzie smartly scored the first goal for the Rangers, ere the game was ten minutes old. The Third next had a look-in, but Gow repulsed them. Getting away again the Rangers had the ball through once more, but the referee decided the Hislop was offside when he scored. A good run by the Third’s right wing enabled Burns to equalise, Reid letting the ball slip through his hands. Halftime result – Rangers 1 goal: Third Lanark 1 goal. Aided by the wind, the Rangers were not long in making their presence felt in the second half. They pressed the Volunteers hard, and but for the brilliant defensive tactics of Downie they would have considerably augmented their score. From a free kick McKenzie headed through a second point for the Rangers. The Third strove to equalise, and occasionally their forwards broke away, but they made little progress against the Rangers defence. Towards the close of the game the Rangers fairly hemmed in their opponents, Hislop headed third goal for them, and McKenzie a fourth. This was all the scoring. For the winners, Gow at back, Mitchell halfback and McKenzie, Henderson and Hislop forwards were the best, while Downie, Thomson, Smith and Johnstone were most prominent for the losers. Final result – Rangers 4 goals: Third Lanark 1 goal
