Match Trivia

These clubs met at Ibrox Park Govan, the ground of the Rangers to play off their undecided tie in the Glasgow Cup. The day was a lovely one for football, and about 2000 spectators attended, and witnessed a very hard game, which eventually ended in favour of the Rangers by two goals to none. The Volunteers lost the toss for choice of ends, and had to play against a slight breeze during the first round, but this was in a measure neutralised by the sun, which shone in the faces of the home team. The play was very equal for a few minutes after the kick off, and some neat returns were witnessed between McIntyre and Hotson on the one side and Rae and Oswald on the others. The ball however, got well among the forwards and the first neat run of the day was made on behalf of the Volunteers by McIntyre, who cleared himself of the opposing backs and got within easy shying distance of the Rangers goal. At the last moment the ball cannoned against Gow, and came out over the touchline. After the throw-in a close scrimmage took lace dangerously near the uprights, but Nicol slashed out and saved his charge. The ball coming out near Muir, that player got possession, and after a short piece pf dribbling sent it nicely in front of Fraser, who made a pretty run right up to the 3rd L.R.V. goal and made a shot that Park had to shy out. Some even play followed in midfield, and the ball was as often over the touchlines as in active play. McLuggage roused the enthusiasm of the strangers by a clever bit of tackling between him and Muir, but the ball was sent over the bar without any damage being done. The Rangers however eventually had the best of it and a close run in which the whole five forwards took park was successful in sending the ball through. The Volunteers appealed for ‘off side’ however, and the appeal was sustained by the referee. After this the 3rd L.R.V. made it hot for their opponents, and Nicol was twice called upon to save his charge, which he did in capital form, and showed that he could keep goal as well as nay representative the Rangers ever had between the posts. The play was changed to Volunteers lines in a few minutes, and the blue glad men were seen crowding round the sticks with great determination. A fast shot was sent in by Fraser, but it was headed out by Hamilton. Brand however, got possession a dozen yards further down the field, and finished up a pretty run by scoring a goal. Till the call of halftime both sides were busy, and the 3rd L.R.V. had a couple of corner flag kicks, but no more scoring occurred in the first round. In the second half the 3rd L.R.V. had the wind in their favour, but the sun in their eyes. Brand kick off for the home team and the ball was smartly returned by Maley, who was lying well up, and the Volunteer forwards were soon in front of the Rangers lines. A free kick gave them greater advantage, but McLuggage, who played widely all through when in front of goal, missed a fine chance by sending the ball past the right goalpost. After the kick out in front the strangers stuck to the Rangers territory for sometime, till Hotson by a splendid bit of tackling, cleared the ball away, and it was now the 3rd L.R.V. time to fell alarmed for the safety of their goal. Shots came thick and fast from the busy feet of Fraser, Peacock and Brand, and a fourth from Wilson caused Park to throw away the ball. Two corner flag kicks were awarded era the ‘blues’ could be driven off, and even then the 3rd L.R.V. backs could only save ground for a time by kicking the ball into touch. When the Volunteers did get over the neutral line, however, they were not easily driven back, and for the five or six minutes the Rangers perhaps, had never such an exciting time of it in front of their goal without damage being done. As it was Nicol saved several fast shots from Maley, Johnstone, McIntyre and Thomson from taking effect, and the two extreme backs of the Rangers headed and kicked clear with commendable pluck. The Volunteers continued to press and before relief came to the home team they had to submit no fewer then three corner flag kick right off. The Volunteers continued to have the best of it till within seven minutes of the call of time, when the Rangers came away with great dash. The ball was sent down on the 3rd L.R.V. goal Gow, after a hot scrimmage Muir dashed in from halfback and headed the ball through. The whistle was sounded not long afterwards leaving the home eleven masters of a hard fought field by two goals to none.
