Match Trivia
Before a vast concourse of spectators numbering 55,000 the final tie between Third Lanark and Rangers was brought off in crisp spring weather and on a splendid turf, at Hampden Park. Although the Rangers won the toss they elected to play against the wind. The Third Lanark with the breeze at once set up a spirited attack, and Sinclair, Fraser and Craig offered a strong defence. The Rangers could not get set a going so cleverly were the halves and backs of the opposition playing. Sinclair was the strong man in the Rangers defence, and some of his saves were wonderful. Sloan broke up the Rangers attacks repeatedly, and placed well to his forwards, but McKenzie was frequently at fault in the goalmouth. As halftime approached the Rangers charged the disposition of their forward’s line, and the change immediately worked well. More than once Raeside had cause to remember the attacks of Smith, Kyle and McColl. Halftime – no scoring. The wind which had died down in the first half, again asserted itself, and the Rangers benefited by it. Their attack was very determined, but lacked in method at goalmouth; Raeside on one occasion was lucky in getting rid of a good try from the left. The Third warmed to their work as the end approached, and they all but opened the scoring, Johnstone sending in a very fast, angular shot. Sinclair fell but gathered the ball cleverly and threw it round the post, giving away a corner, which was fruitless. The Rangers followed with a well-engineered attack, but Hamilton could not finish, and the goal, which was looked for, did not come. Play continued hard and exciting, but never brilliant to the end. Result – A draw no scoring. Gate money £1271 15s. Stand and enclosures £200 – total £1471 15s
