Match Trivia
After it had looked a million to one on Rangers in the first half of this second-round Glasgow Charity Cup-tie, at Firhill Park, Third Lanark gave them a terrible fright. It required extra time to bring a settlement, and this after Rangers had altered their front line when they saw the job was more difficult than they had imagined. In the fourteenth minute, Buchanan, with a long drive, opened the scoring. Stevenson jumped a little too soon, and just as he came down, with his hands up the ball went into the net high up. Play ran in favour of the Ibrox lot, but they seemed to think they could win as they liked. Also, McGowan, who was getting a run in centre, missed scoring from the easiest of chances. Third Lanark did not look like giving the Rangers defence much trouble, but five minutes from the interval they did the unexpected. Clark swung the ball out to Hamill, who centred. McCandless was too nice with his header, and Callaghan snapped at the chance. He shot hard and the ball hit the post and went into the net. This was what the Third Lanark boys needed to put life into them. The half-backs, Clark particularly, put the ball about with any amount of boot in the second half. Jack and Halliday became full of running, and Hamill was also to the fore. Had Allison ben able to profit from the forcing play of Hamill, extra time would not have been required. Ten minutes from the end of the ninety, Fleming went to centre and McGown to outside right. Third Lanark put Hamill in the centre and Allison at outside left. So, they finished the hour-and-a-half, but in the extra half-hour Third Lanark went back to their original formation. Just five minutes after the half-hour had begun, Marshall drove with the right foot and beat Stevenson with a low ball. It was proper that Marshall should have won the tie, for he was the worker in the Rangers’ attack. Rangers’ strength was at half-back. Marshall and Morton played a grand first half along with Craig. McGown was at a disadvantage in centre. I should like to see him and McPherson again – the latter is game, but he plays too much with the left foot. Stevenson kept a good goal, and McColgan and Moreland came on after a poor start; they had a worrying first half. The Cathkin half-backs trio spared themselves not a bit. Hamill was best of a disjoined forward line, and Jack also showed cleverness. Allison was too slow and uncertain. He kept bad position.
