Match Trivia
The undecided tie in this competition between the Rangers and the 3rd L.R.V. came off on the ground of the Rangers Ibrox Park, and after a very keen contest ended in favour of the Volunteers by two goals to one. It may be remember that no fewer than five meetings have actually taken place between the tow in order to settle the tie. In the first at Cathkin Park the teams had three goals each; in the second on Ibrox Park, one all; in the third each had three goals; while on the previous Saturday the frost caused a postponement, after the representatives had a met on the field. The weather on Saturday was all that could be desired for a good game at football, and about 10,000 spectators paid for admission to Ibrox Park. The Rangers had decidedly the best of the play in the first half, and looked like winning, but towards the end of the second the 3rd L.R.V. assumed command, and while they managed to put on two goals, the Rangers only succeeded in scoring once, and thus were defeated they two goals to one. A few minutes after the advertised hour the teams appeared in the field ready for the fray, and as the Rangers won the toss for choice of goals the 3rd L.R.V. kicked off, and the ball was soon over the Rangers lines. The Rangers however retaliated, and hovered about the Volunteers lines for some time, and it took the 3rd L.R.V. backs all their time to clear. Once as shot from Hislop came very close, and just as Kerr was getting into position to have another after coming out of the ordeal of tackling Thomson in a most successful manner, a ‘foul’ staved further aggressive proceedings on the part of the Rangers. After the ball had been kicked off from where the infringement had taken place, the Volunteers had a neat run to towards the Rangers goal, and Johnstone lost a fine chance when no one was near him to make a goal, but he sent the ball over the bar. The keepers kick-out was soon followed by another run on the part of the Volunteers, and this time Burke missed a good chance by sending the leather over the lines. For a few minutes the 3rd L.R.V. made it lively, and the man between the Rangers posts had to fist the ball out on two occasions. Before they were driven off the Cathkin Park champions had a corner flag kick, but nothing was gained by it – the Rangers backs doing splendidly. A few minutes of pretty even play in the centre ensured, and then the Rangers the Rangers by nice passing play were at it again near the Volunteers sticks, where the tackling was very severe on both sides. Two close scrimmages and a piece of handling by one of the 3rd Lanark backs enabled the Rangers men to look very dangerous, and the 3rd L.R.V. goalkeeper had to pick the ball up and chuck it clear. The invaders had a corner flag kick, however and a subsequent shy by Kerr went over the bar. Some even play afterwards ensured, and then the backs on each side showed some splendid returns – Gow and Thomson in particular excelling. Both teams afterwards did their very best to score, and each goalkeeper repeatedly cleared splendidly, but the halftime whistle sounded without any scoring. In the second round the Rangers kicked off and for some time the play was lively in the vicinity of the 3rd L.R.V. goal, but the Volunteers were strong in their down on the Rangers lines, where a shy by Lapsley went over the bar. In a minute or so afterwards the 3rd L.R.V. forwards assumed a determined attitude in front of the posts, and in dodging the ball among the invaders Reid ran out further then the law allows, and his side was penalised by a free kick. The scrimmage that ensured was an exciting one, and from it the ball was gradually worked back from the goal 15 yards, where Lochhead got possession, and sent in a beautiful shot that went over the keepers head, and clean through. This was now one goal to the Volunteers, and the teams faced up once more in the midfield, and the Rangers and the Rangers started with some effect. In a short time they were well in front of their opponents posts, and a kick over the lines by Scott enabled them to have a corner flag kick, but Henderson was too long in arranging for a shy that the place of defence, and he was knocked away from the ball by Lochhead. A scrimmage near the corner flag was the next point of interest, and the ball was eventually sent over the touch-line at the pavilion side. The throw-in was given to the Rangers, and it was some time before the ball was cleared away from the goal. After this, however the Volunteers came away again, and a brilliant run headed by McInnes, Thomson and Johnstone, was the means of sending the leather away down the field towards Reid. The latter stopped a couple of fine shies from the feet of Burke and Lapsley, but Burke came again out of the scrimmage, and made a second goal. It was now considered all up with the home team, who had to bring down the ball and kick off from the centre. They kept it in their opponent’s territory for some few minutes, and McPherson lost what many considered a sure goal by sending the ball over the lines when there was not a soul near. The 3rd L.R.V. by-and-by retaliated, and Smith had a long shot over the Rangers goal bar. When time was getting exhausted the Rangers made one determined effort and succeeded in forcing the leather through in a terrible scrimmage. After the next kick off the Rangers tried had to score again and nearly succeeded. Getting a free kick a few feet from the 3rd L.R.V. goal they had another determined ‘melee’ almost under the bar, and for a few seconds the tussle reminded one of a long maul in a Rugby match. To the relief of the 3rd L.R.V. partisans and the disappointment of the Rangers followers the ball was at length cleared away, and not long afterwards the whistle sounded, leaving the Volunteers the winners by two goals to one
