Match Trivia

The Charity cup-holders got through their first-round tie at Celtic Park with nothing to spare. Ten minutes from the start the Ibrox reserve custodian accomplished a smart double save from a penalty awarded against Ormonde, and throughout gave a sterling account of himself. The Rangers got the only goal of the game after fifteen minutes play, Hendry making a dash through the Cathkin defence and passing to Reid, who deftly hooked the ball through out of Brownlie’s reach. The Third, who had a stiff breeze against them, nearly equalised soon after, Farrington doing well to get a fine try of O’Hagan’s over the bar. The Rangers, however, did most of the pressing till the interval. Reid skimmed the cross-bar with a characteristic effort. Brownlie had a grand save from Hendry, and Gordon after breaking through in dashing style drove hard against the post. The Third resumed strongly and Rankine had a great shot from twenty yards’ range stopped by Farrington, who on several subsequent occasions thwarted the Cathkin men in their strenuous endeavours to get the equaliser. A tame Ibrox attack this half was relieved by some brilliant runs by Smith who showed remarkable pace for a veteran. He gave Brownlie one terrific shot to hold, and twice presented Reid with ideal passes which the centre failed to clinch. The losers were valiantly served at centre-half by Ferguson, and in the same position Riddell made a very favourable impression in his debut as a senior. For the Third Rankine had some dashing sprints, but their best forward was O’Hagan. Gemmell did not maintain the form he showed against St Mirren. The best man in either front rank was the redoubtable Alex Smith.
