Match Trivia
Association football in Scotland will close officially on May 15, but grace will be extended for a few charity games in the close season. Bad luck has shadowed the Glasgow Charity Cup competition this season, and unfortunately an attractive game like Third Lanark and Rangers was completely spoiled last Saturday by the weather, the rainfall keeping many thousands away from Ibrox Park. All in the drawings totalled £282, and with Celtic v Queen’s Park, and the probability of a Celtic – Rangers final, a splendid return ought to accrue despite early failures. The Cup holders had not a great task set them to defeat the Third Lanark, as Cross and Sloan were ‘absent’ from the middle division. The most prominent absentee on the home side was John May, who is said to have leanings to return to England. In the first half the game was well contested, and ruled fairly even, but in the second portion, when the Third had the wind against them it was largely a case of Rangers v Third defence, with the Cathkin backs and half-backs playing for safety, and the goalkeeper dealing with everything that came his way. From a corner kick ten minutes from time, Campbell, who was suffering from a displaced toe nail, got the only goal of the day. McDonald and Smith, were the brightest of the Rangers forwards, while Gordon who was again at right half, added to his reputation as a coming player and shot like a veteran. Brownlie was most prominent for the losers, McGhie was the better back, J McIntosh did well at centre-half, and Ferguson shone at left half
