Match Trivia

Rangers ran no rick at Ibrox. Except that Buchanan was at left-back and McMillan at inside right, the team was full strength. They won easily. Third Lanark never rose above the unfavourable conditions as the others did. They were always struggling, and it was only during a part of the second half that the forwards got going at all well. Rangers won too easily for the match to be exciting. It was a cold day and a cold game. Craig scored in eight minutes from a free-kick. Stevenson appealed, evidently on the ground that he or Jamieson was impeded, but the goal stood. Seven minutes later McPhail shot a second, after getting the pass from McMillan. Stevenson seemed set to save this one, but the ball appeared to take a puzzling jump off the snow. Before the half-way whistle, McPhail and Archibald brought the total to four. Third Lanark did somewhat better in the second half, but the Rangers struck me as not being all out. Anyway, Wilson headed past Hamilton, and later Craig gave Rangers a fifth. The match was not a test for Rangers, who played good football considering the conditions. Buchanan was quite at his ease. The half-backs had usually such a hold on the Cathkin forwards that there was little left for the defence to do. McPhail had the ball under good control. He played a splendid first half, when he and Morton made some nice little runs. Considering that McMillan gets a chance only now and again, he does very well. Fleming was strong in his running and Archibald put across some nice centres, especially in the second half, when Third Lanark’s goal ran several narrow escapes. The loss of an early goal seemed to knock a lot of the spirit out of the losers. Stevenson, facing a biting wind in the first half, was unfortunate. Too much work was thrown upon the defence because the forwards could not keep the ball when they had it. Jamieson kicked well, but what was the use of playing so much for offside? Moreland was the best of the half-backs but held the ball rather long. It was a poor day for the forwards
