Match Trivia

Rangers certainly deserved to win, but there’ll be a few doubts about the way they did. Not that there was anything shady about it. But it wasn’t as decisive and clear cut as it should have been. Here they were opposed to a weak Third Lanark; a Third Lanark whose defence just managed to scrape by, and whose forwards – well, just scraped. Yet the Light Blues turned round one down and a few corners behind. Hughes has passes to Jones, who worked over to the left. Jackie banged it across, and Park moved in with it. Wee Hughes well placed whipped it from his mate’s toes and smacked it into the net. That, mark you, was after half an hours’ play. Up until then Rangers had countless opportunities. How they missed them was unbelievable. Suffice to say Third, greatly encouraged, came sweeping into the game. Until the restart at least! Big Jimmy Smith was injured and had to retire, and here was the gag – ‘Away aff and strengthen the team’ coming true. Young McIntosh performing wonders on the right, switched to centre, his wonders to continue. Smith had hardly left the field when McIntosh didled defenders in a little space and gave to Gillick, who equalised. Thereafter it was Rangers’ game. They did have difficulty in scoring, but eventually two came within as many minutes. They weren’t bright goals. A Bolt pass which McIntosh took on the run and a Gillick cross which Johnstone dynamited into the net. Dawson of course, had a Dawson day. Gray, against wee Hughes, would be glad to hear the ‘raiders passed’ signal. Shaw, not so troubled was prone to kick anywhere. Bolt was again the half-back supreme. Young Woodburn gains confidence and power with every game. In fact, there wasn’t a half-back failure, so slap-dash was the third forward play. In front, Jimmy Smith in that first half was dithery. He seemed to set off on a tour every time he got the ball. Complete contrast was boy McIntosh. Dead for goal went Mac every time. Johnstone wasted good work by being moody. Gillick was better than I’ve seen him for a long time. Venters seemed to be bothered later on with a foot injury. No difficulty about the Cathkin front line. Hughes was their only danger man. Connor could never bet away long enough from Woodburn to be profitable. I liked very much St Mirren’s Geordie Urquhart, he was the only half with constructive, forcing ideas. Blair and Black stood up well to the assaults
