Match Trivia
Rangers won the toss, and played with the wind and a strong sun at their back. The Third kicked off and were first to press, a shot by Peddle going past. Then the running was taken up by the Rangers and from a pass by McPherson, A Smith had a try, which Thomson saved in grand style. Keeping up the pressure, the Rangers had the hardest of lines in not scoring, Thomson getting the ball away from a perfect siege. The Third’s left wing were next prominent, and Peddle again had a chance, but he shot far over the bar. A minute later a fine shot by Dunlop was neatly caught by Wilson, who punted the ball half way up the field. Some good work by Miller and Oswald ended by the latter shooting, but he missed the mark by inches. Play was fast, and the Third held their own well. Their passing and dodging were superior to the Rangers. Coming away against the wind, they got through all opposing, and Peddle centred, where Fyfe caught the ball and landed it in the net, thus scoring the first goal for the Third. Halftime result – Third Lanark 1 goal: Rangers 0. On restarting play was tame, but the Third were first over the line, Bell shooting behind. Just after this Wilson had to concede a corner, which however came to nothing. A breakaway by the Rangers was spoiled by McIntyre running the ball over the line. The Rangers made strenuous efforts to score, but on play they were out of it. Then the Third came away, and from a scrimmage Bell scored their second goal. Wilson had no chance to save his charge. After a visit from the Rangers forwards the Third came away again, and Peddle missed a clear goal by shooting over the bar. Play was very fast. A corner for the Rangers was Wilson, and then the Third again got possession. A free kick for them 30 yards out was beautifully placed by Bowman, and Dunlop headed their third goal. Fyfe scored a fourth goal with the prettiest shot of the day. From this to the close of play was mostly confined to the Rangers territory, but Wilson saved well. Result – Third Lanark 4 goals: Rangers no goals.
