Match Trivia

Plated at Ibrox Park, Govan before 5000 spectators. Losing the toss the Third Lanark kicked off. The Rangers were first to press, but Kerr headed past. After some midfield play Stewart initiated a run. He had a bout with Drummond, from which the Rangers came off second best. Stewart’s shot was a beauty, but it missed by inches. Henderson next had a chance from one of Stevenson’s passes, but he fell when trying to get on the ball, and a throw-in was the result. The game was very fast, each end being visited in turn. Haddow had to fist out a beauty from McInnes. Coming away in a body, the Third forwards transferred play to Haddow’s end, where Mitchell conceded a corner. The ball was well placed, and Boyd with a swift shot scored the first goal for the Third. McPherson was putting in some grand forward play for the Rangers. Time after time he started runs, but he was poorly supported. Blyth had several tries, but he was invariably beaten by Bowman. Stewart and McInnes were giving Mitchell and Drummond more than they could well manage. A corner for the Third came to nothing. Halftime result – Third Lanark 1 goal: Rangers 0. Without leaving the field the players resumed the game. Blyth and Gray, who was now playing outside right, opened a run for the Rangers. They carried the ball right into Wilson’s quarters, and Bowman got the ball away. A free kick on the 2 yards line for the Third was smartly taken by Johnstone. He tipped the ball to Stevenson, who landed it in the net ere Haddow knew where he was. Two goals to the Third. The Rangers strove hard to improve their position, but they were met at every point by the Third defence. Playing with confidence, the Third carried all before them. Johnstone scored their third goal with a fine shot. It was now all over with the Rangers. They were completely outplayed by the Third, for whom Wilson in goal played splendidly. Result – Third Lanark 3 goals: Rangers 0.
