Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park before 3000 spectators. When the game started rain was falling, and looked like lasting. The Cathkin captain won the toss, and elected to play against the wind, Hamilton starting for the Rangers a little after four o’clock. Fine work by the Rangers front rank tested the Cathkin defence, and Gibson scored with a fine effect. Barr saved from Hamilton at the expense of a corner, which was sent behind, and then a breakaway on the Cathkin left brought three fruitless corners. After some midfield play, Low beat Gardner, and Miller kept out at then expense of a corner, from which McPherson scored a second point for the Ibrox men. Goudie beat Gillespie well, and let Hyslop away, and from the long one’s centre Miller scored a third goal for the Rangers with a fast, low shot. Ibrox did all the pressing now, and both Miller and Hyslop gave Milne some real warm shots to deal with, corners following in each case. Milne kicked away another fine try of McPherson’s and Hamilton, when well placed in conjunction with Miller, was finely stopped by Gardner. Until the interval play was slow, and all in favour of the ground team. Halftime – Rangers 3 goals: Third Lanark 0. Rain was still falling when the game was resumed. Milne saved from McPherson with Hamilton in close attendance, and at the other end Muir shot past. Gillespie had a fine try, which Dickie no more than cleared, and the Third still pressed, but to little purpose. The Rangers left pair got down, and Milne had to look lively to clear from Miller. McPherson grazed the bar with a likely looking try, and in a promising rush to the other end Gillespie was pulled up for offside. At the other end a lovely shot of Hyslop’s from a pass by Low’s was tipped over by Milne, but the corner was cleared. Dickie ran out and kicked away from Muir, but 25 minutes from the resumption Muir made good the error by scoring from a pass of Hannah’s. Hyslop with an open goal, shot past and Miller who was in lovely shooting form, gave Milne a nice handful. McPherson and Miller both tried Milne unsuccessfully, and until the close the Rangers kept the upper hand. It was not a very interesting game, and the Rangers were full value for their goals. The result was – Rangers 3: Third Lanark 1.
